            "content": "<p>The title of the 91-year-old Ghanaian-British photographer James Barnor’s new&nbsp;<a href=\"https://www.serpentinegalleries.org/whats-on/james-barnor/\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\" style=\"color: rgb(51, 51, 51); background-color: transparent;\">retrospective</a>&nbsp;at the Serpentine Galleries, “Accra/London,” is deceptively simple. As well as being very literally the names of the cities where the bulk of his pioneering work was made between the 1950s to the 1980s, it’s also a reflection of the unparalleled window those images offer into a pivotal moment in history. The world was opening up to an independent, post-colonial Ghana, with Accra quickly became one of West Africa’s most dynamic and cosmopolitan capitals; meanwhile, Black British culture was flourishing, even in the face of both widespread racism and the devastating effects of the Commonwealth Immigrants Acts on Britain’s diasporic communities throughout the 1960s.</p><p>“I feel very proud to have been part of it,” says Barnor from his home in southwest London. “It’s incredible to see younger generations being very attentive and opening their minds to everything that happened in Black culture then.” Even more surprising, perhaps, is the fact this is the first major survey of Barnor’s globetrotting work, prompted in part by his rediscovery by a new generation of creatives. A virtual celebration of the exhibition at the end of March drew a starry lineup that included the esteemed architect Sir David Adjaye,&nbsp;<em>British Vogue</em>’s editor-in-chief Edward Enninful, and Naomi Campbell, while photographers from Liz Johnson Artur to&nbsp;<em>Vogue</em>&nbsp;contributor&nbsp;<a href=\"https://www.vogue.com/contributor/tyler-mitchell\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\" style=\"color: rgb(51, 51, 51); background-color: transparent;\">Tyler Mitchell</a>&nbsp;have cited the profound influence Barnor’s work has had on their own.</p><p><br></p><p><br></p><p><img src=\"https://assets.vogue.com/photos/6081c97016b720dfdb2bf583/master/w_1600%2Cc_limit/CF_BARNORJ_Vintage_021.jpg\" alt=\"Image may contain Human Person Dance Pose Leisure Activities Dance Clothing and Apparel\"></p><p>Music group photographed for promotion overseas, Accra, 1970s.Courtesy of Galerie Clémentine de la Féronnière</p>",
